![]() That’s important because changes in land use alters the way water flows. A Department of Homeland Security report by the Auditor General found 58% of all of FEMA’s maps are outdate d. But the United States is huge and updating those maps doesn’t always happen on time. After all, they are the government and they are here to help! FEMA is required to update the flood maps every five years. As you can imagine, all this bureaucratic work takes lots of time. Once the map is issued, the public has 90 days to comment and appeal. Then FEMA may or may not meet with community officials to get their input. They are the work product created by studying an area’s history of flooding, looking at what flood mitigation features are in place, and then analyzing the risk and creating a map. These maps are the Flood Insurance Risk Maps (FIRM) that identify special hazard areas at high risk of flooding. How FEMA Flood Maps are Created FEMA’s Risk Mapping Assessment and Planning Program is the official process used to create FEMA flood maps. Private insurers were locked out, even though they increasingly had access to technology that allowed them to better calculate the risk of flooding more accurately than relying on maps. In practice, this Congressional action created a 50-year monopoly on the flood insurance market. The third task for creating maps was supposed to facilitate the other two tasks. The second task helped communities identify and reduce the risks of flood disasters and make those communities and their residents safer from floods. The first task resulted in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) which started covering flood risks in 1973. The Federal Emergency Management Administration was charged with providing flood insurance, encouraging and supporting floodplain management, and developing maps of flood hazard zones. Many private insurers had abandoned the flood insurance market and people struggled to get coverage for their homes and businesses. Why FEMA Flood Maps Were Created In 1968, Congress passed the National Flood Insurance Act of 1968. Heck, I’ll even show you how to determine your flood zone. In this page, your trusty Flood Nerd will guide you through the complexities of FEMA flood maps, 100-year flood zones, and what to do if a new flood map affects your home. That’s why you need a Flood Nerd as your sherpa to guide you through the process and help you avoid common pitfalls like overpaying or underinsuring. ![]() With flood insurance, two houses side-by-side may pay different rates for the same coverage and insurance amounts. When it comes to homeowners insurance, the company just figures out what your house is worth and what it would cost to repair it, then they factor in the chances of a loss and those rates are pretty standard. Buying flood insurance is much different than buying homeowners insurance. That means taking on a second job, raiding the retirement account, or even forgoing retirement to earn enough money to repair flood damage. And if you don’t have flood insurance, a flood can ruin your finances now and in the future. But did you know that flooding is the number one natural disaster we face in the U.S.? All it takes is a few inches of water to cause catastrophic damage to your property. To get the expected flood height above ground, you would need to subtract your ground elevation from the base flood elevation.Hurricane! Tornado! Fire! Earthquake! So many terrible things can happen to your home. The Base Flood Elevations are denoted in the datum NAVD 88, which represents the number of feet above mean sea level in that datum. On a map, it may read: AE13, which means the structure is in the AE flood zone with a BFE of 13. While the flood zones identify the extent of flood risk, the Base Flood Elevation identifies the expect height that flood waters are expected to reach in a high risk area. These zones range from high- to moderate-risk areas: VE, AE, AO, A, and X. Within the floodplains shown on the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for New York City, there are five zones. These maps identify areas that are at risk to flooding. Areas with a high flooding risk are identified as being in the 100-year floodplain, and areas with a moderate flooding risk are identified as the 500-year floodplain. It is important to understand how to interpret the flood maps to better understand your risk.

Because of its ethically nuanced narrative approach, he took the Hindu word associated with a deity's manifestation on earth in physical form, and applied it to a player in the game world. Due to the ethical content of his story, Garriott wanted the real player to be responsible for their character he thought only someone playing "themselves" could be properly judged based on their in-game actions. In this game, Garriott desired the player's character to be their Earth self manifested into the virtual world. The use of the term avatar for the on-screen representation of the user was coined in 1985 by Richard Garriott for the computer game Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar. You stand in a throng of multifleshed being, mind avatared in all its matter, on a broad avenue winding through a city of blue trees with bright red foliage and living buildings growing from the soil in a multitude of forms. The humans build a "galactic receiver" that allows its users to engage in "artificial realities". In the story, humans receive messages from an alien galactic network that wishes to share knowledge and experience with other advanced civilizations through "songs". In Norman Spinrad's novel Songs from the Stars (1980), the term avatar is used in a description of a computer generated virtual experience. It was first used in a computer game by the 1979 PLATO role-playing game Avatar. The word avatar is ultimately derived from the Sanskrit word ( avatāra / ˈ æ v ə t ɑːr, ˌ æ v ə ˈ t ɑːr/) in Hinduism, it stands for the "descent" of a deity into a terrestrial form. However, studies have found that the majority of users choose avatars that resemble their real-world selves. Users can employ avatars with fictional characteristics to gain social acceptance or ease social interaction. Often, these are customised to show support for different causes, or to create a unique online representation.Īcademic research has focused on how avatars can influence the outcomes of communication and digital identity. They can take the form of an image of one's real-life self, as often seen on platforms like Facebook, or a virtual character that diverges from the real world. Nowadays, avatars are used in a variety of online settings including social media, virtual assistants, instant messaging platforms, and digital worlds such as World of Warcraft and Second Life. Richard Garriott extended the term to an on-screen user representation in 1985, and the term gained wider adoption in Internet forums and MUDs. The term avatāra ( / ˈ æ v ə t ɑːr, ˌ æ v ə ˈ t ɑːr/) originates from Sanskrit, and was adopted by early computer games and science fiction novelists. Alternatively, an avatar can take the form of a three-dimensional model, as used in online worlds and video games, or an imaginary character with no graphical appearance, as in text-based games or worlds such as MUDs. Avatars can be two-dimensional icons in Internet forums and other online communities, where they are also known as profile pictures, userpics, or formerly picons (personal icons, or possibly "picture icons"). ![]() ![]() In computing, an avatar is a graphical representation of a user or the user's character or persona. This is a weak doubled pawn, this is a fianchetto, this is a castled positiion, etc. So, a chessplayer doesn't really see a picture, he sees patterns of forces on the board, most of which he is familiar from millions of real games. they could not recall more that the average person off the street. Then they were presented with a board in which the pieces and pawns were mixed up in a random manner. Then they were asked to reproduce it on another board. Master chessplayers were given a memory test: they looked at a middle game positiion from a real game for a number of seconds. Some people have excellent memories and other can develop their memory through association, imagery, linking, etc., but the idea of recalling something like a picture-the human brain doesn't work that way. ![]() There's still a lot of studying to do, and even more playing, but you have to admit it would be lovely :) It'd be waaaay easier to get good at chess with a spectacular memory. Everyone knows that certain styles of games tend to have common themes, and traps and tricks to follow inaccurate moves. you could pore over analysis and keep the game in your head. Obviously you need to still understand these positions, but wow, imagine how deeply you could study chess. This is true, but if I had a photographic memory I'd study as many two move checkmates as i can until i have the general idea of the various patterns involved, then move to three, then look over all the different opening traps (as in Chess by Lazlo Polgar), memorize all the major opening moves, endgames, etc. This is why we humans must study position and strategy, as we just can'tĬalculate the way a computer can do such things. So the problem is one has to learn literally billions of positions but also grasp them at a deeper tactical level. ![]() ![]() Once set up, images stored in iCloud become natively available on your PC.
